Want to Bring Your Own Laptop?

    Bring Your Own Laptop

We want you to feel at home on campus, in class, and on-line, so do not hesitate to bring your own laptop if you believe that will help bring you academic success. Just note that the support provided through St. John’s University’s Academic Computing Initiative will be unavailable to students that bring their own laptop. Students who bring personal laptops may be required to purchase and install software required for classes. If you are unsure of your software needs, please consult with your academic department.

    • College of Professional Studies Computer Science students are advised to bring a laptop with at least 8GB of RAM
    • College of Professional Studies Mass Communications students are advised to select Apple machine
    • The Peter J. Tobin College of Business students are advised to select a Windows machine
    • St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Bachelor of Fine Arts students are advised to select the Apple MacBook Pro

    Minimum Hardware Specifications

If you will be an incoming freshman or transfer for the fall 2016 semester and plan to bring your own laptop, your machine's hardware specifications should at least be comparable to those of the Fall 2017 models.

    The recommended minimum requirements are:

    • i5 processor or higher
    • 8GB of RAM
    • 128Gb Hard Drive (Internal Storage)

    Minimum Software Specifications

    Apple Laptop

    • Yosemite 10.10 or higher
    • Microsoft Office Professional 2016 for Mac (Available as a free download via your SJU Microsoft 365 account)
    • Anti-Virus Program, such as McAfee or Norton for Apple

    Windows Laptop

    • Microsoft Windows 7 or higher
    • Microsoft Office Professional 2016 for Windows (Available as a free download via your SJU Microsoft 365 account)
    • Anti-Virus program, such as McAfee or Norton for Apple

If you do bring your own laptop to campus with you, it is important that it must meet both of the hardware and software minimum specifications. If it does not, you should update it with one that does in order to ensure that you will have the required computing power to complete your coursework.

    Attention Apple Users

Personal Apple users should also be aware that they may be required to run the Windows operating system in order to successfully launch and run various software required for their classes. In such cases, Apple users can partition their laptop for a Windows environment either through Boot Camp or install a virtual machine environment by purchasing Parallels or VMware Fusion. Students with MacBook laptops who need to run Windows will also need a valid copy of the Windows 7 or higher operating system and any other programs that their classes may require.

    Non-Participants Will Have Access To:

    • Microsoft Office365 email account with 5 free downloads of Microsoft Office suite
    • Wireless access
    • Access to wireless printing on campus
    • WebEX (web & video conferencing)

If you wish to participate in the St. John's University laptop program, you can review the details online.
