We want you to feel at home on campus, in class, and on-line, so do not hesitate to bring your own laptop if you believe that will help bring you academic success. Just note that the support provided through St. John’s University’s Academic Computing Initiative will be unavailable to students that bring their own laptop. Students who bring personal laptops may be required to purchase and install software required for classes. If you are unsure of your software needs, please consult with your academic department.

If you do bring your own laptop to campus with you, it is important that it must meet both of the hardware and software minimum specifications. If it does not, you should update it with one that does in order to ensure that you will have the required computing power to complete your coursework.
Personal Apple users should also be aware that they may be required to run the Windows operating system in order to successfully launch and run various software required for their classes. In such cases, Apple users can partition their laptop for a Windows environment either through Boot Camp or install a virtual machine environment by purchasing Parallels or VMware Fusion. Students with MacBook laptops who need to run Windows will also need a valid copy of the Windows 10 Operating System and any other programs that their classes may require. This software cannot be installed by the University.
If you wish to participate in the St. John's University laptop program, you can review the details online.
