Q&A With Drew
What are a few of your major job responsibilities as an actuary?
I work on the Individual Life Insurance and Long-Term Care Modeling Team. We are responsible for updating and testing the model used for valuation when new legislation is passed, or when new model features or changes are available—all while thinking how this can be done more efficiently for our end user.
I also test system changes, utilize testing plans, analyze results, and maintain necessary controls to ensure the integrity of the results generated by the system. I implement actuarial valuation and projection solutions by working closely with other cross-functional teams, such as valuation, experience study, pricing, external and internal auditors, and regulators. The master’s degree in actuarial science fully prepared me to successfully take on these duties.
How did your St. John’s education help you prepare for a career in actuarial science?
St. John’s University helped me acclimate to the corporate environment. Mock interviews are available for practice and networking sessions. St. John’s also has knowledgeable professors in the master’s in actuarial science degree program who have industry experience.
What attracted you to St. John’s to pursue this degree?
I selected St. John’s because it has a 100-percent placement rate.
Were there any other major factors that drew you to pursuing your graduate degree at St. John’s?
A major factor was that the School is in the heart of Manhattan. I knew I wanted to work in New York City and hoped that studying there would open opportunities once I earned a Master of Science degree in Actuarial Science.
Did St. John’s large network of alumni connections help you move forward with your career?
I can’t remember the exact timing, but a classmate of mine in the actuarial science program at St. John’s referred me for a position at a small- to mid-sized consulting company. I got the position and subsequently met a few other St. John’s alumni at the company.
Additionally, I remain in contact with several classmates whom I seek out for career advice and occasionally ask them general questions about various aspects of the actuarial profession.
How did the University support you while you pursued your degree?
My career advisors at The Ellen Thrower Center for Apprenticeship and Career Services at St. John’s made sure I applied for suitable positions and talked to the right people. Jody and Vicki are very attentive and unrelenting in a good way. Professors are always available for additional study, help, and guidance.
Students in the GSRM program are exposed to various chief executive officers and other industry leaders. What was your experience with this, and how did it help shape your education and career path?
I remember participating in several lunch-and-learns where employees of certain companies told us about their employer and what they do. It gave me an idea of what I would get into if I worked in property and casualty/life/retirement, which are the main actuarial lines of business where actuaries typically work.
Did St. John’s provide you with financial assistance or scholarships to help you pursue your degree?
Yes, St. John’s provided financial aid. The generous financial package was a reason why I chose to attend the University.
