Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month

APHM is celebrated nationally in May. This month pays tribute to and honors the rich and diverse cultures, legacy, traditions, histories, and contributions made by Asian and Pacific Islander individuals and communities. 

This year, we honor the Asian and Pacific Islander community through our theme, “The Road to Your Debut.” Inspired by the traditional Filipino coming-of-age ceremony and Korean Pop debut culture, this year’s theme invites you to explore how to prepare for your own entrance into the spotlight. Whether it is taking care of your mental health, setting intentions through artistic ceremonies, nourishing your spirit through food and more, APHM 2024 is here to help you prepare for your debut at St. John’s and beyond!

Prepping for your debut requires having tough conversations with yourself. In this panel, we will explore the Interpersonal dynamics of a successful professional--balancing self, family, and career. Some topics we will discuss include being the “Model Minority”, Tiger Parents, Mental Health and pursuing your passions in Asian households. We will be joined in this event by the Yellow Chair Collective.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Campus Ministry invite you to our Annual Ramadan Iftar Dinner, a gathering that honors the holy month of Ramadan. This Iftar will take place in the Kiernan Suite at 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 4th. As we come together to break fast, this event is more than a dinner; it's an opportunity to engage with and learn about the rich traditions of Ramadan, as well as its significance in relation to Lent and our shared Vincentian values and faith. Guests will have the opportunity to engage in discussions on the themes of Ramadan and Lent, exploring their spiritual significance and the ways in which they intersect with the Vincentian Mission. This serves as an opportunity to deepen your understanding of these religious observances and how they guide us in fostering a community of respect, compassion, and solidarity. Halal Dinner will catered from a local Turkish Restaurant.

Set your intentions with us at our very own Loy Krathong Workshop! The Loy Krathong Festival is an annual tradition that is celebrated throughout Thailand. Krathongs, beautifully decorated floats made from banana leaves and flowers, are offered as a gesture of thanks and goodwill. The festival also symbolizes the cleansing of one’s spirit and letting go of negativity. All materials will be provided and refreshments will be served.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Division of Student Success invite you to “The Art of Asian-Pacific Food” featuring a cooking demonstration of Southeast Asian food. 

Chefs Raina and Gautam specialize in teaching authentic dishes in an approachable way that everyone can enjoy. Along with the cooking demo, there will be an art exhibit featuring Asian-Pacific food. Participants will also enjoy bubble tea from Lil M Bubble Tea House, as well as music from the region of Southeast Asia.

From 3 to 6 p.m., stop by Marillac Terrace for food and games. From 6 to 9 p.m., join PARE in Marillac Auditorium for performances. The evening also includes prizes and food. Tickets will be sold at the door
