Alexandra Foukalas
From a young age, Foukalas knew she was destined to teach.
Although they may have already decided which schools they will attend, many college bound students experience feelings of excitement and uncertainty about the next four years ahead.
“My mind-set going into college was to get involved in as many clubs and activities as possible and make long-lasting friendships along the way. And that’s exactly what I did!” says Alexandra Foukalas, freshman in The School of Education. Alexandra predicted the following four years at St. John’s would be filled with opportunities to meet new people and get involved in the organizations and activities she cared about the most.
Only two months into her first semester, Alexandra was already a member of the Greek Cultural Club, Student Programming Board, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society, Education Society and Greek Intramural Soccer Team.
She didn’t waste time becoming an active member of the campus community at St. John’s, “Taking on all these new adventures, I have broken out of my shell and learned more about myself and what I can offer to the world. Each organization represents something I believe in. Kappa Delta Pi emphasizes academics, Education Society highlights community service, and Greek Club stresses the importance of heritage and culture.”
From a young age, Alexandra knew she was destined to teach. She was nine years old when her fourth grade teacher inspired her to become an educator, “Ms. Brudz was the ideal teacher because she deeply cared about her students. I looked up to her as a role model and wanted to be just like her. I would go home after school, run to my room, put on fake glasses and start writing a history outline on my mini blackboard while pretending to teach my imaginary class.”
Currently enrolled in the Childhood and Special Education programs, Alexandra says it’s the time and dedication professors in The School of Education invest in their students that keep her motivated to do well.
“The professors in The School of Education help you strive to do your best and are always there to guide you in the right direction. That’s exactly why I wanted to become an educator; I want to inspire and impact people and help them establish an enthusiasm for learning.”
Although this is her first year at St. John’s, Alexandra already feels she has grown into a more confident, self-assured person, “For the first time in my life, I’m comfortable in my own skin. I am certain that I will be successful and make a difference in the world.”
