St. John's University School of Law remains committed to continuing the work begun by the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights in developing a pipeline for historically minoritized and underrepresented groups to be able to get to law school.
Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program
For the second consecutive year, St. John’s Law is collaborating with the Sonia & Celina Sotomayor Judicial Internship Program to run its eight-week College Division. The Sotomayor Program offers students from underserved communities and diverse backgrounds an unrivaled opportunity to build legal knowledge, skills, and experience as judicial interns in New York City state and federal courts. In addition to their four-week judicial internship, students in the College Division participate in an LSAT boot camp and in rigorous academic, professional, and personal programming—from legal research and writing to professional branding, wellness coaching, and soft skill trainings. Through this full, immersive, and engaging summer experience, students can gain the skills and resources they need to apply to law school and become a practicing attorney.
Assembling a Dream Team for the Court . . . Room: An Introduction to Sports Law for High School Students
St. John’s is again partnering with the Long Island Nets and the New York Liberty organizations to present a two-week summer program for high school students who reside or attend school in Brooklyn and Queens or on Long Island. Students explore their interests at the intersection of sports law and civil rights in daily classes. They also build negotiation skills in workshops and learn about the business of sports, networking, financial literacy, and college admissions through a dynamic professional development series. Education meets activism when students participate in community engagement activities focused on social justice. Spaces will be filled on a rolling basis until June 9. Apply online now!

Admission Unmasked
LSAC is offering a new program Admission Unmasked™ for those planning to apply to law school during the 2022-2023 cycle — or any time after that. How can candidates prepare to apply to their dream schools? What is the application process like? What kinds of careers are available to people with a law degree? These and other questions will be answered during this in-depth program, running from June 20 through July 29. Participants will gain deeper knowledge and develop strategies and a chance to complete a personal statement that can be used as part of their law school applications. For over a decade, in partnership with colleges and universities across the country, the Ronald H. Brown Law School Prep Program for College Students helped students from traditionally underserved and underrepresented groups—who are often the first in their families to attend college—apply to law school and pursue legal careers.
The Ron Brown Prep Program featured academic boot camps, legal internships, mentors, a speaker series, events at firms and bar associations, customized LSAT test prep, support groups, diversity and personal statement workshops, and resume and interview counseling by career professionals.
In 2016, the Access Group Center for Research & Policy Analysis® awarded the Ron Brown Prep Program a $125,000 grant through its Legal Education Diversity Pipeline. In 2019, 17 young men from around the country participated in the Ron Brown Prep Program as the inaugural class of the all-new DiscoverLaw.org PLUS Program/Ron Brown Prep Program Foundations. This first-of-its-kind offering was made possible by a very generous $300,000 grant from the Law School Admissions Council, through its Diversity Initiatives Grant Programs. Men of color are vastly underrepresented in the legal profession. The new program was designed to address this gender/diversity gap, and ran alongside the Ron Brown Prep Program’s longtime, successful offerings for rising college juniors and seniors.
Over 150 Ron Brown Prep Program alumni have gone on to 54 different law schools nationwide, including Cornell, Duke, Fordham, Georgetown, George Washington, Harvard, St. John’s, SUNY at Buffalo, University of California at Berkeley, University of Florida, University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale. Together they’ve earned millions of dollars in law school scholarships.
Today, the Law School's diversity efforts have been expanded and the pipeline program (formerly Ronald H. Brown Law School Prep Program for College Student) has been fully integrated into the Admission Office of the Law School and the Ronald H. Brown Center for Civil Rights has increased its programming and support for continuing St. John's Law student. And look out for more exciting announcements in the future!
