College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences: Committed to the University’s Vincentian Mission

St. John’s University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has fully embraced and is strongly committed to addressing unmet community needs through education, practice, and research, especially to the underserved and indigent urban population. The College continues to take pride in and live out the University’s Catholic and Vincentian mission and values.

Community partner: New Life Community Health Center/Boulevard Family Transitional Residence

Description of activities: As an Academic Service-Learning activity, final-year students on their Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) present health chats on various topics to residents of the Boulevard Family Transitional Residence.

Community partner: Long Island Abundant Life Church

Description of activities: An annual health fair each summer offers free blood pressure and glucose screenings, medication reviews, and cancer and immunization education.

On behalf of the University’s Urban Pharmaceutical Care Research and Education Institute

Community partners: New Life Community Health Center, Boulevard Family Transitional Residence, Catholic Charities 

Description of activities: In collaboration with community partners, an annual immunization initiative sponsored by the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Vincentian Institute for Social Action provides free influenza vaccines to the underserved and indigent in local communities. 

Community partner: Queens Public Library

Description of activities: Over the past five-plus years, St. John’s University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has partnered with the Queens Public Library to host various events, including brown bag or medication check-ups, older adult fairs, health fairs, medication safety events, and presentations for individuals with English as a second language. Faculty and students on their advanced pharmacy practice experiences (CPP 5407: Ambulatory Care Clerkship) and students involved with student organizations actively participate in these events.
