Why do you want to be a nurse, and what led you to choose St. John’s University’s nursing program?

Lauren: I aspire to become a nurse practitioner specializing in oncology, neonatal, or family care. My motivation to pursue nursing was born from my personal experience during the COVID-19 quarantine. While stuck at home, I became increasingly inactive, which led me to confront my health issues. It was also during this time that I discovered my mother had a tumor. The news shattered my world.

Watching her go through the experience, as well as dealing with my health issues, inspired me to want to provide care and assistance to others. Having gone through such traumatic experiences, I understand the importance of reassurance and support. I want to be able to offer that to others.

The St. John’s Nursing program offers new equipment, technology, and a diverse student body, making it an exciting opportunity for a fresh start. Although the program will be challenging, it will be worth it. Completing a new program shows resilience to future employers and can be a selling point when seeking employment after graduation.

Beverly: Growing up, I have always had an interest in nursing. When I discovered St. John’s University opened a nursing program, I asked my parents if I could apply. As soon as I stepped on the campus, I knew I would like it there. Everything was so welcoming, and the people were friendly. I did the overnight orientation and explored the campus. I even got to speak with Francine Laterza, Ed.D., R.N., PNP, CNE, Chair of Nursing and Associate Professor/Industry Professional, Department of Nursing, about the nursing program, and she said that even though it was new, she felt confident about its success.

The teachers are very close-knit with the students, so it feels like family. They care about each student. I appreciate that the program feels like we’re all in it together. The professors want you to succeed and are always there to help you. Of course, there will be stressful times, but I know I can always fall back on someone if needed. Overall, it’s a great program, and I’m glad I chose St. John’s.

Natalia:  I have a family connection to the University since my mother attended St. John’s School of Law. Many of my family members pursued health-care careers, inspiring me to follow in their footsteps.

In addition, growing up, my brother was very ill and needed a lot of care, which made a lasting impression on me. It was this experience that ultimately led me to pursue nursing in college.

Who are the role models or mentors influencing your interest in nursing?

Lauren: Florence Nightingale has been a major inspiration for me. I first learned about her in high school and was fascinated by her role as the founder of modern nursing. During the Crimean War between Britain and Russia, she worked as a nurse, aiding British soldiers and improving hospital sanitary conditions. Her efforts decreased the fatality rates significantly. She also founded nursing schools to train military doctors and hospital nurses. I admire Florence Nightingale’s hard work, dedication, and commitment to her goals. As a future nurse, I strive to follow her example. I also credit my parents and God for their guidance and support in helping me pursue my passion for nursing.

Beverly:  My parents have influenced me a lot in this regard—both are nurses. I remember my mom taking me to work, and I saw how she cared for the patients. People praised her for her support, which made me think about how I could do something to help others, too. Although I also heard about the challenges of nursing, this is the right path for me. I want to put myself in the shoes of others and help them in any way I can. That’s my goal, and I hope to achieve it.

Natalia:  My great-uncle has greatly influenced my decision to pursue nursing. He is a nurse practitioner and has provided me with helpful advice and insights about the field. Having someone who understands nursing and is currently practicing in the field has immensely benefited me.
