Beatrice O’Carroll ‘95C returned to The Peter J. Tobin College of Business on Nov. 29 to explain the intricacies of cryprocurrencies to a room full of economics and finance students eager to learn more about this burgeoning field.

Sponsored by the Economics and Finance Society in cooperation with the Applied Finance Institute, the event, “Cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin Alone?” featured O’Carroll, head of institutional sales at global cryptofinance company Circle, discussing various aspects of the industry. She was introduced as a “cryptocurrency enthusiast” and someone with great “optimism about the future of the industry” by Associate Professor of Economics Aleksandr V. Gevorkyan, Ph.D., the Society’s faculty advisor.

After tracing her career path from Wall Street finance to the cryptocurrency industry, O’Carroll delivered a broad overview of the current trends in digital currency development. She then answered related questions on the future of cryptocurrencies and possible career paths for students interested in pursuing opportunities in the field. She emphasized the need to extend one’s knowledge beyond the specific tasks and to invest effort in learning about the technical aspects while keeping the bigger picture of evolving business models in mind.

This was O’Carroll’s second visit to her alma mater in the month of November. She was a featured speaker at the University’s Fintech Conference four weeks earlier.
