Do you want to take on a unique faculty leadership role that will allow you to approach writing in new ways?

We’re looking for faculty for Spring 2019 who want to be in residence with Writing Across Communities. The Faculty-in-Residence will collaboratively develop Writing Across Communities at St. John’s with Dr. Anne Ellen Geller, Director, undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty and administrators in shared leadership. Faculty-in-Residence will hold central leadership positions in creating, designing, implementing, and advocating for the initiatives of the program and will imagine and facilitate collaborations between Writing Across Communities and SJU administrators, faculty, and students’ communities for the 2019 Spring Semester.

As Writing Across Communities Faculty-in-Residence, SJU faculty from any and all disciplines and colleges will have the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience related to writing and writers across communities, be central to the initiatives of the program, and collaborate with/mentor faculty peers, students, and administrators.

Faculty-in-Residence will be expected to work with and engage with faculty and students in a variety of ways, some of which include:

○ Attend and participate in a minimum of four (4) Writing Across Communities staff meetings during each semester

○ Collaborate with faculty and Undergraduate Writing Coordinators on projects centered around learning, teaching, and writing in communities

○ Serve as a liaison between Writing Across Communities and various departments, faculty members, staff and students

○ Attend and assist with the planning of a spring Faculty Writing Across Communities Retreat Dependent upon Faculty-in-Residence interest(s), possible projects and opportunities might include:

○ Co-facilitating reading groups composed of faculty and Undergraduate Writing Coordinators discussing writing theory and pedagogy

○ Collaborating with other program staff and faculty to compose and distribute social media content

○ Collaborating with other program staff and faculty to research writing and writers while also considering publishing and/or presenting that research

○ Developing cross-discipline projects 

Faculty-in-Residence Qualifications:

● Tenured or Tenure-Track Faculty from any discipline and college at St. John’s University, including University Libraries.

● Be reflective and interested in engaging in conversations about writing and varied communicative resources as collaborators articulate, understand, and develop critical awareness of the way writing works in communities inside and beyond St. John’s University

● Be attentive and committed to issues of equity and inclusion

● Accept and respect all collaborators’ identities (racial, cultural, linguistic, religious, ethnic, age, gender, ability, and sexual orientation)

● Exercise patience and empathy in relation to learning, teaching, and writing

● Be dedicated to the transformation of long-standing pedagogical methods and thinking about writing

● Be committed to subverting the normative hierarchy in the student-professor relationship

● Experience with a language other than English or with multiple Englishes is welcomed and greatly appreciated

● How do you imagine involving and working with other faculty in your project(s)?

● How would you articulate this/these project(s) impacting a community/communities?

The Faculty-in-Residence will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of five Undergraduate Writing Coordinators, the Assistant Directors, and the Director of Writing Across Communities. Please submit your application letter by the end of the day Wednesday, December 12, 2018.

Compensation: $1,500/semester (as stipend or research/travel support)
For Spring 2019 this compensation will be remunerated at the end of the Spring semester but before May 31, 2019.

This position is for Spring 2019 with possibility for reappointment.
