A group of 46 St. John’s University students embarked on a mission of networking and career exploration as they visited our nation’s capital to meet with many notable St. John’s alumni living and working in Washington, DC, during the annual Alumni Insiders View…US Capital program on October 9.

While the four-day excursion included several exciting site visits and career panels, the highlight for most of the current undergraduate, graduate, and law students was the alumni reception, where they were able to meet and network with alumni and hear from several speakers. Norean R. Sharpe, Ph.D., Dean, Joseph H. and Maria C. Schwartz Distinguished Chair, The Peter J. Tobin College of Business, inspired the room with her words of encouragement and gave an update on the progress seen at the College and University.

The annual program is enjoyed by the student participants, as well as the alumni who continue to give back to the University. This year, alumni included recent graduates such as Kamran Daravi ’14C, ’16GP, who reflected on his time at St. John’s. He cited on-campus programming as one of the many ways he was able to connect with fellow students and faculty, which in turn prepared him for a successful career after graduation. He shared with the group why it is so important to become involved in service and embody the University’s Vincentian mission throughout one’s career.

Students were exposed to a variety of career paths during the trip. “The people I met gave me new motivation for my future career,” said Cooper Miquel, a senior majoring in Government and Politics.

“I appreciated the feedback on how to begin a rewarding career in legal studies,” said Christine Maccaro, a Legal Studies major in her senior year. “This program made me realize the vastness of the St. John’s alumni network—I am so grateful that the University offers opportunities like this to connect with them and learn.”
