St. John’s University presents its second annual Dr. Jaya Haldar Memorial Seminar on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. in the D’Angelo Center. The seminar will include a guest speaker, Dr. Martin Chalfie, Professor of Biological Sciences at Columbia University. The title of the talk is, “GFP: Lighting Up Life.”
Dr. Chalfie earned his doctorate in biochemistry at Harvard University. He also shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP. His discovery has become an important tool in studying biological processes in cells. Dr. Chalfie is recognized for his laboratory’s significant contributions to the study of developmental genetics of identified nerve cells in C. elegans. His current research extends to the study of how genes that regulate touch cell differentiation, and other genes expressed in touch cells, act to transduce touch.
In 2015, the seminar was endowed by Dr. Dipak Haldar in memory of Dr. Jaya Haldar, a retired full-time professor at St. John’s University. Dr. Jaya Haldar joined the Department of Biological Sciences at St. John’s University from Columbia University Medical School in 1983. Her research was focused on posterior pituitary hormones oxytocin and vasopressin and on understanding of the role of oxytocin in the spinal cord. The endowment provides an opportunity for students and faculty to meet a high profile scientist and provide a platform for networking and alumni engagement.
