St. John’s University to Offer “Service Scholarship Awards” to Children of Police Officers, Firefighters and Members of the Military

New scholarships provide financial assistance to the sons and daughters of those who serve our country

October 26, 2017

St. John’s University announced today that the University is providing scholarships in the amount of $2,000 per academic year, for up to four years of continuous, full-time undergraduate enrollment, to the children of our nation’s police officers, firefighters and members of the military beginning in the fall of 2018.

“These new scholarships are in keeping with our nearly 150-year history of service to others,” said Jorge Rodriguez, Vice Provost and Chief Enrollment Officer. “Children of our nation’s heroes from across the country who are seeking a higher education can now look to an institution as prestigious as St. John’s to assist with the affordability of college.” Mr. Rodriguez added, “Given what these outstanding men and women have done for our country, the University finds it fitting to give back to some of our bravest citizens by helping to educate their sons and daughters in the greatest city in the world.”

St. John’s is a Catholic university with a unique Vincentian mission to provide educational opportunities to all, in particular students with economic need. The University has a longstanding commitment to educating deserving students, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college.

St. John’s University enrolls the largest entering first-year cohort of any Catholic college or university in the United States. The University has also earned recent recognition as a source of educational opportunity for those who serve in the military. This year, St. John’s received a Top 10 Military Friendly® School Gold Award from Victory Media—an organization that connects the military community to employment, education and entrepreneurship opportunities. In addition, Military Advanced Education & Transition (MAE&T) rated St. John’s University as a “Top School” in their 2017 Guide to Colleges and Universities.

For the new “Service Scholarship Awards” announced today, eligible students must be a dependent child of a police officer, firefighter, or member of the military who is in active service full-time, retired or killed in the line of duty. Students must also be current high school seniors planning to enroll at St. John’s in the fall of 2018. To be considered for this award, the admission application must be submitted on or before January 15, 2018. Interested families can visit the scholarship page of the St. John’s University website for more information.
