St. John’s to Celebrate 16th Annual University Service Day

September 18, 2017

St. John’s will celebrate its 16th annual University Service Day in honor of its Vincentian tradition of giving back to the community on Saturday September 23,2017. “University Service Day” sends over 1,500 students and faculty members from the Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island campuses to various service sites to serve the community across the five boroughs and Long Island.

The St. John’s community will be lending a helping hand by serving the hungry in soup kitchens, visiting residents at nursing homes, engaging in fun activities with disadvantaged children, cleaning and landscaping area parks, painting rooms in nearby schools and community centers, and providing assistance with so many other important projects.

St. John’s Vincentian mission is inspired by St. Vincent DePaul’s vision to help the less fortunate and disadvantaged.  St. Vincent worked alongside St. Louise de Marillac to create hospitals for the poor, develop asylums for orphans; orchestrate workshops for the unemployed; set up local charities; and improve the education system in France.

Specific events to take place on St. John’s University Service Day, Saturday, September 23, include:

  • The League of Yes of Long Island (East Meadow, Nassau) The League of Yes’ mission is to establish and sustain baseball programs for people (of all ages) with disabilities.
