St. John’s University’s 23rd Annual Founder’s Week Celebration September 20 - 27

St. John’s University will hold its annual Founder’s Week celebration September 20-27 with a series of events that highlight the University’s Mission and this year’s theme: Be Vincentian: Welcome the Stranger.

This year’s celebration will feature “Migration as Global Learning” a Student Exhibition: Department of Art and Design and Global Studies that will run from September 20-October 20.  This exhibition reveals the confluence of civilizations and cultures from the south, east, and west of Europe in Seville, and its contemporary connections with the United States and the world.  It also displays a selection of creative works and learning experiences developed by St. John’s students in an art project/photo essay for the course “Monuments of World Architecture,” which was included in the Discover the World: Europe program in Seville, Spain, during the 2016–2017 academic year.

On September 21, St. John’s will hold the Annual Vincentian Convocation, with a lecture by Most Rev. John O. Barres, S.T.D., J.C.L., D.D., the fifth Bishop of Rockville Centre, who will also be honored with a Gold Medal. The Vincentian Convocation Ceremony acknowledges individuals who exemplify their commitment to service and the St. John’s University Mission.

This year’s Vincentian Convocation honorees include: Vincentian Mission Award presented to Ching-Wen Rosa Yen ‘03GEd, ‘12G, Director of Multicultural Affairs, Division of Student Affairs, St. John’s University; Caritas Medal presented to Mercy Haven, Inc. and accepted by Sr. Patricia Griffith, LMSW, D.Min., Co-founder and Executive Director, Mercy Haven, Inc; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Medal presented to Michele Pistrone ‘89L, Director, Clinic for Asylum, Refugee and Emigrant Services (CARES) and Professor of Law, Charles Widger School of Law, Villanova University; St. Vincent de Paul Medal presented to David Wood, PA-C Physician Assistant, Project Renewal; Frederic Ozanam Award presented to The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program accepted by Lori Pompa, Founder and Executive Director, The Inside-Out Center at Temple University; Degree of Doctor of Commercial Science presented to Rev. Elmer Bauer III, C.M. ‘02MBA Provincial Treasurer, Eastern Province of the Congregation of the Mission and Member, Board of Trustees, St. John’s University.

Founder’s Week concludes with the 16th Annual University Service Day on September 23.  More than 1,500 volunteers will serve those in need throughout New York City and abroad at St. John’s campuses in Rome, Paris and Seville.
