Johnny's Innovation Challenge returns Saturday, November 22!
A dynamic competition where students come together to brainstorm, innovate, and pitch sustainability solutions. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), teams will present ideas to expert judges for a chance to win exclusive opportunities and internships. Join us for a full day of collaboration, innovation, and competition with the chance to win monetary prizes and exclusive opportunities.

Award Criteria:
*CCPS Award: Awarded to the team demonstrating exceptional global entrepreneurship, showcasing innovative solutions with a broad, international impact. The winning team for this award secures a spot to compete in the Hult Prize* National Competition in Boston.
**VIC Award: Awarded to the team with the best early-stage idea demonstrating strong potential to become a successful startup.
**The Farella Vincentian Innovation Award: Awarded to the team with the most impactful, socially-conscious innovation focused on social justice and community betterment. This award doubles as the Farella Vincentian Innovation Award, underlining the recipientâs commitment to the Vincentian mission and the importance of ethical, community-focused entrepreneurship. This award is open to external international participants.
All monetary prizes are subject to applicable tax reporting.
JIC is Part of the St. John's University Startup Incubator Program
The Startup Incubator Program takes student founders on a year-long journey in entrepreneurshipâbeginning with Johnnyâs Innovation Challenge in the fall, advancing through the James & Eileen Christmas Business Plan Competition in the spring, and culminating in the Venture & Innovation Center's Startup BootCamp each summer. While each event stands on its own, together they create a powerful progression of learning and experience.
*Students can access St. Johnâs innovation ecosystem and competitions, while only the most engaged earn a spot in the summer BootCamp, the entrepreneurship capstone.

Venture & Innovation Center Startup BootCamp
Summer 2026
An immersive summer Startup Boot Camp at VIC where the brightest Johnnies sharpen pitch-ready ventures, engage with expert mentors, and accelerate ideas into action. Held in the Venture & Innovation Center, itâs the ultimate capstone for the most driven student entrepreneurs.
Students of all disciplines are welcome.

How to Participate in JIC:
Applications are closed.
- Eligibility: Open to all students enrolled at St. Johnâs University.
- Team Formation: Participants must form teams of 2-3 members prior to the registration deadline.
Returning teams are welcome to compete; however, they must present a new product or idea, or a significantly updated version of their previous pitch.

About the Event:
Johnnyâs Innovation Challenge is designed to foster innovative solutions aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Interdisciplinary teams will work together to develop and present their ideas to a panel of expert judges.

Spring 2025 Recap: Students Put Entrepreneurial Skills to the Test at Johnnyâs Innovation Challenge
Students from St. Johnâs University and elsewhere gathered in St. Augustine Hall on the Queens, NY, campus to showcase their entrepreneurial instincts on Saturday, February 22, during the first-ever Johnnyâs Innovation Challenge.

JIC Winner Attends Hult Summer Bootcamp!
St. Johnâs University graduate student Uday Kumar, M.S. Enterprise Risk Management, who co-founded one of the winning teams, KnotHashtags, through Johnnyâs Innovation Challenge, was selected for the prestigious Hult Summer Bootcamp in Cambridge, MA, where he joined global peers to enhance his entrepreneurial and consulting skills through intensive, real-world business training.

Where can I work with my team?
- You can work in any of the labs and workstations at CCPS St. Augustine Hall 2nd Floor and the CCPS Café. Students will be assigned spaces for the Pre-Screening round at 2:00 PM. Please check back on the day of the competition, as your team will be assigned a number upon check-in.
How long are the presentations? Will there be Q&A?
- Each finalist will present for no longer than 4 minutes.
- Judges will have 4 minutes for the question-and-answer portion of your presentation immediately following your pitch.
- Only judges will be asking questions and only team members will answer
Can I use a pitch deck?
- Yes, you may use a pitch deck. Pitch decks must be submitted in the Dropbox by 3:15 PM.
How will time be kept?
- Time will be kept by a JIC Student Committee member during the pitch and the Q&A
What comes after I give my presentation?
- After all teams have finished presenting, judgesâ scores will be tallied and award decisions will be made.
How long would I need to stay?
- Please plan to stay until 6:00 PM to be respectful of other participants and receive a token of participation.
How will prizes be distributed?
- Monetary prizes will be announced after judge's deliberation. Winners will be contacted regarding distribution process within one week post-competition.
- Recipients of non-monetary opportunities will be notified a week post-competition.
What about confidentiality?
- Just like any other public pitch or ideation event, attendees will not be bound by any confidentiality agreement.

II. Validate: Workstations
Participants can visit workstations located in the labs on the 2nd floor of St. Augustine Hall to receive guidance from industry experts and faculty on a variety of topics supporting innovation. Students must visit at least two stations for a 10-minute consultation each.

III. Synthsize: Pitch Refinement and Pre-Screening Prep
Teams refine their pitches and improve their presentations based on judgesâ feedback. Be ready for pre-screening rounds in your assigned lab by 2:00 PM, during which judges will deliberate on the finalists.
