A coming-of-age tale of an Italian boy growing up in the turbulent 1960s on Belmont Avenue in the Bronx surrounded by wiseguys, racial tensions, and a complicated romance entranced The McCallen Society and guests on a Broadway outing to see A Bronx Tale: The New Musical on Wednesday, June 14, 2017.

Approximately 40 McCallen members, students, and alumni enjoyed the much-anticipated musical, which is directed by Robert De Niro and written by Chazz Palminteri—who appeared together in the original movie.

A pre-show dinner at Trattoria Trecolori set the mood with an authentic Italian meal featuring red wine, antipasto trecolori, tortellini alla pana, and tiramisu. Susan M. Damiani ’86CBA, Director of The McCallen Society, thanked guests for attending and made several announcements about upcoming events, and then the group proceeded to the Longacre Theatre.

John (’56CBA) and Thea (’57CBA) Pellman, longtime members of The McCallen Society, support the University by attending as many alumni and donor activities as possible. “I’ve been affiliated with St. John’s for more than 55 years [and] I have loved it since the day I started,” Ms. Pellman said. “Being a McCallen member helps me continue that relationship.”

She was looking forward to the show because the setting was New York. Recent alumnus Ridge D. McKnight ’16CPS shared Ms. Pellman’s excitement, noting this was his first time at a Broadway show. “This is my fourth McCallen Society event, so, if I'm available, I try to make them all,” McKnight said. “As a young G.O.L.D. alumnus, I am invited to exclusive McCallen Society events. It is a great experience every time I socialize and network with its members. It is so interesting to hear all of their journeys and fascinating to hear how much different St. John’s was in the past.”

Some of the attendees got autographs and photos with the cast, which ended the night on a memorable note.
