Members of the Staten Island campus community gathered for the annual Legal Career Evening in the Kelleher Center on October 18. The event was sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations and the Career Center, and organized by prelaw advisors Joseph Bongiorno, J.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of History; Biagio Pilato, J.D., LL.M., Assistant Professor, Accounting and Taxation; Ellen Boegel, J.D., Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies; and Joseph G. Kenny, J.D. ’81L, Associate Professor, Business Law.
An alumni panel of lawyers and paralegals discussed their careers and other potential career paths. Robert M. Harrison, Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Services, St. John's School of Law, was the featured speaker and addressed the challenges and opportunities facing law school applicants. Dean Harrison noted that “the law school enjoys a large number of matriculants from St. John's undergraduate colleges.” St. John’s undergraduates who meet certain requirements can apply to the Law School without taking the Law School Admission Test through the Red Storm Scholars Special Admission Program.
Joseph Kenny Jr. SJC’09, Adjunct Assistant Professor, questioned panelists Joseph Anzalone ’16C, Ramzy Dawoud ’16CPS, Victoria Volpe ’16CPS, Jeane Calcano ’13CPS, and John Poppe ’07CPS about their experiences in law school and the legal industry. The panelists uniformly pointed to the multitude of resources available at St. John’s, including the Career Center and prelaw advisors, as being especially helpful in their preparation for a legal career. Following the formal program, audience members learned more about the law school application process and career opportunities during a question-and-answer session.
Joseph J. McCarthy ’81L attended the event. “The strong presence of St. John’s Law alumni in the legal community helped in my career development,” he said.
