The Yardley, PA, resident is Associate Actuary at Lockton Re LLP, in Philadelphia, PA. This reinsurance business helps large insurance companies purchase policies from other insurers to limit their exposure to unexpected events or disasters.

In his native country of Trinidad and Tobago, Jelani Estrada ’22C was considered a shy and unassuming student. When he came to St. John’s University and confronted the COVID-19 pandemic, however, he quickly found his voice and a passion for giving back to the community.

Jelani, a graduate student pursuing a Master of Public Health degree, first came to St. John’s as an international undergraduate student in 2018, eager to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. In March 2020, he landed a position as a patient transporter at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, in Flushing, NY, not far from St. John’s Queens, NY, campus.

Navigating the Future of Homeland Security and Criminal Justice: From 9/11 to Tomorrow
In the wake of the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the United States found itself confronting a new reality—one marked by unprecedented threats to national security. In response to these challenges, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) emerged as a pivotal force in safeguarding the nation against terrorism and other hazards. The DHS represented the largest restructuring of the federal government since World War II, consolidating the efforts of 22 disparate agencies into a unified entity tasked with protecting the homeland. In this article, we examine the creation of the DHS and how it has evolved throughout the years—as well as what the future may hold for homeland security and criminal justice leadership.
New York Special Education Certification Changes
There has been a persistent shortage statewide of special education instructors. The New York State Education Department’s certification requirements and segmentation for special needs instructors are changing to combat this shortage. Shahla Hussain, Ph.D., Associate Professor, History, St. John’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was recently awarded a prestigious Presidential Grant by the Russell Sage Foundation (RSF), co-funded with the Carnegie Corporation of New York, that will allow her to create an oral history project about the South Asian immigrant community in Queens, NY.

Within the past year, Ketan D. Patel, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, has received two substantial National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants—totaling more than $1.1 million in funding designed to explore next-generation cancer therapy and foster biomedical research at St. John’s University.
