Stephen B. Horowitz

Professor Horowitz is a former corporate bankruptcy attorney who is now Director of Legal English Programs at St. John’s University School of Law School.  He has a J.D. from Duke University School of Law, an M.A. TESOL from CUNY-Hunter College, and a B.A. in history from the University of Pennsylvania.  He has presented on legal English topics for the Legal Writing Institute, the Global Legal Skills Conference, the Southeastern Association of Law Schools, and TESOL International. Professor Horowitz has also previously worked for the Wall Street law firm of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, served as Managing Director of Bankruptcy Services for The Altman Group, and created the Bankruptcy Bill cartoon series.  Additionally, Professor Horowitz has worked for law offices in Japan, studied bankruptcy law at Waseda University in Tokyo, and taught English in Japan’s public school system as a participant in the JET Programme.  Prior to working for St. John’s, he taught legal English courses at Pace University School of Law and has taught adult academic literacy at Borough of Manhattan Community College and LaGuardia Community College in New York. He speaks Japanese, some Spanish, and also knows a few phrases in Chinese and Portuguese.
