Job Summary: 

Multiple departments within the School of Education at St. John’s University seek applicants for adjunct faculty positions to begin the Spring 2024 semester and beyond. The needs of the departments will determine the courses. The usual needs for each department are noted below. 

Administrative and Instructional Leadership

Seeking candidates with experience as school building and district leaders or higher education leadership experience. Ability to teach leadership preparation courses or doctoral courses in theory, technology, and culturally responsive pedagogy. 

Counselor Education

Seeking candidates with a strong Counselor Identity, preferably graduates of Counselor Education programs, who could teach in any of the eight CACREP core areas, or within the school counseling or clinical mental health counseling specialization courses. A preferred qualification is a Doctoral Degree from a CACREP-accredited Counselor Education program or related field. 

Curriculum and Instruction

Seeking candidates to teach foundations of education, special education, human learning and development, methodology for various disciplines, instructional technology, human relations and multiculturalism, classroom management, art and music in inclusive settings, and assessment. 

Education Specialties

Seeking candidates with terminal degrees, preparation, teaching experience, and certification in one or more of the following areas: Special Education, PK-12. TESOL (ENL), PK-12, Literacy, PK-12, Literacy Online Doctoral level. Knowledge and skill in online CANVAS preferred.

Essential Functions:

The primary responsibility for this position is teaching undergraduate and/or graduate students pursuing degrees leading to state certification. Classes are in person (at the address: 8000 Utopia Parkway, Queens, NY 11439) and online, both synchronously and asynchronously. For asynchronous classes, a certificate is required.

Qualifications:

Required Education: Candidates must have a master’s or doctoral degree within the field of the applicable department.

Required Teaching Experience: Candidates should have at least three years of classroom teaching or professional counseling experience, with a preference for candidates fully certified in their area of expertise.

The School of Education offers doctoral degree (i.e., Ed.D. and Ph.D.) programs and 43 master’s degree programs that accommodate career changers, field changers, and those who seek expertise and/or certification in the areas of Adolescent Education, Childhood Education, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Early Childhood Education, Literacy, School Building Leadership, School Counseling, Special Education, and TESOL. Our programs are designed to be flexible, with online and traditional schedules.

Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership

The Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership offers master’s and advanced certificates in school building/district leadership and educational doctorates in instructional leadership and administration and supervision. The master’s and advanced certificates are offered online, while the Ed.D. programs are delivered with hybrid and online course options. All synchronous courses are offered in the evening after 5 PM. 

Department of Counselor Education

The Department of Counselor Education offers master’s degrees and advanced certificates in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The advanced certificate in school counseling is offered online, and all other programs are offered on the Queens campus with online course options. All programs are offered in the evenings after 5 PM. 

Department of Curriculum and Instruction

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in childhood and adolescent education and a doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction. The department also offers middle school extension advanced certificates. Courses are offered on the Queens campus and online during the day and evening. 

Department of Education Specialties

The Department of Education Specialties offers in-person, hybrid and online master’s degrees and advanced certificates in Literacy PK-12, Special Education, PK-12, and TESOL, PK-12. An online Ph.D. in Literacy is offered. Dual certification MS programs are also offered in TESOL/Special Education, Literacy/TESOL, and Special Education/Literacy.

Division/Department Information

The Counselor Education department within the School of Education at St. John’s University is seeking applicants for a contract clinical faculty member beginning in fall of 2024. The School of

Education offers doctoral degree (i.e., Ed.D. and Ph.D.) programs and 43 master’s degree programs that accommodate career changers, field changers, and those who seek expertise and/or certification in the areas of Adolescent Education, Childhood Education, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Early Childhood Education, Literacy, School Building Leadership, School Counseling, Special Education, and TESOL. The Counselor Education department currently offers two M.S.Ed. programs, in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) and School Counseling (SCH). The department also offers two advanced certificates in SCH and CMHC. Courses are offered on our Queens campus and online during evening hours to accommodate working professionals. All master’s programs are accredited by the Council on the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), and approved for the graduate student option by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). The MSEd in SCH meets New York state education requirements for initial certification as a School Counselor. The MSEd in CMHC meets New York state education requirements for the limited permit in License in Mental Health Counseling (LMHC), as well as the Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Use Counselor in Training (CASAC-T). Responsibilities

The department is seeking a contract faculty member to serve as a Contract Clinical Instructor/Clinical Assistant Professor - Field Placement Coordinator for both our school and clinical mental health counseling programs. The faculty member will have responsibilities in teaching in either/or both programs and will coordinate the field placement process for students in both programs. The faculty member should have a demonstrated professional network within the counseling community of the New York City metropolitan area, Long Island, and beyond. The faculty member will have a strong Counselor identity, be familiar with CACREP standards, and have a commitment to maintaining both our Counselor identity and CACREP accreditation. Faculty should have active engagement and networking with the profession, at either the local, state, or national level. 

Faculty member responsibilities include teaching courses in either/or both SCH and CMHC programs, as well as coordinating field placement efforts in both programs. Clinical faculty will teach four-four course load, with the option of teaching summer for an additional compensation. Field coordination duties are encompassed within the teaching load (e.g., two instructional/didactic courses and two courses of placement-coordination/advising per semester). The faculty member will teach on both the Queens campus and online, and will be required to complete training in online instruction. They will be required to keep office hours, participate in committees, and attend meetings/events on the Queens campus. This is not a remote position. The faculty member will utilize technology to support our students, programs, and administration; specifically, they will seek to maximize technology to streamline the field placement process, supervisor databases, field work monitoring, and evaluation. The faculty member will support the department during accreditation and audits by providing field placement data outcomes, and recording field placement data per NYS requirement.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • CACREP Master’s degree in a either School or Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
  • Assistant Professor candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in Counselor Education, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program; candidates with ABD status and scheduled degree completion by December 2024 will be considered

Required Experience:

  • At least five years of post-masters professional counseling experience.
  • Fully licensed and/or certified in School Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
  • Familiarity and connections within counseling networks in both school counseling and clinical mental health counseling, particularly in New York metro region

Required Skills and Characteristics:

  • Communication: Public speaking and teaching/training. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Administration: Organizational and project management experience; ability to utilize electronic systems and databases to organize placement information.
  • Technology: Including administrative functions (e.g. email, Microsoft office products, videoconferencing software) and teaching functions (e.g. learning management systems, interactive teaching technologies), and emerging technology
  • Personal characteristics: Ethical, inclusive, collaborative, team-player, student-advocate

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Doctoral and Master’s degree from CACREP accredited programs
  • Teaching experience at the graduate level
  • Experience supervising master’s level counselors or interns
  • Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential
  • Licensure and certification in both School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling (at least one is required, both are preferred)
  • Familiarity with field placement software programs, including implementation, utilization, and training students on these technologies
  • Familiarity with CACREP accreditation

Division/Department Information 

The Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership (DAIL) in The School of Education at St. John's University invites applicants to apply to be a full-time contract faculty member. This position is yearly renewable with a primary focus on teaching and service in the fields of educational and instructional leadership. Duties associated with this position include: 1) teaching graduate courses across DAIL programs with a focus on the advanced certificate programs in district and school building leadership, 2) advising and mentoring aspiring school leaders, 3) engaging with local school communities to forge partnerships with DAIL, and 4) serving on program, department, school, and university committees, when appropriate. Faculty are expected to teach at all NY locations and online. 

Qualifications 

Ideal applicants will have earned a doctoral degree in educational leadership or a related field. They will have a minimum of five years of experience at the district leadership level and experience teaching at the graduate level.  

Candidates will have a proven track-record of being a change agent in K-12 schools and will have the following responsibilities:  

  • Teach and coordinate our school leadership courses via in-person, online, and hybrid settings 
  • Cultivate and manage district partnerships 
  • Advise and mentor District and School Building Leader certification students 
  • Review and revise program curriculum 
  • Interact with State Department of Education regarding certification policy

Job Title:  Assistant Professor of Special Education (tenure track)

Job Summary:  

The full-time faculty position is on a research tenure track line for an Assistant Rank. The faculty will be part of the Department of Education Specialties, within the Programs in Special Education.

Primary responsibilities include graduate teaching of courses in special education ( emphasis on early childhood special education); student advisement; assisting with program functions and other Departmental interdisciplinary activities; maintaining an active research agenda, and service to the program, school, university and the profession.

Essential Functions: 

  • Full-time graduate teaching load for fall and spring semesters 
  • Actively participate in student advisement and student support
  • Maintain an active research agenda, including seeking external grant funding 
  • Contribute to Departmental interdisciplinary activities and initiatives. 
  • Engagement in academic service learning and field-supervision of graduate students at practicum sites across the NYC boroughs and Long Island will be required.
  • Service to the program, School, University, and the academic profession 

Competencies 

  • Earned Doctorate in Special Education or related field (before start date) 
  • Minimum 3 years of full-time teaching experience in areas of Early Childhood/Childhood Special Education for diverse learners and those with disabilities in schools and or community/clinical settings.

Travel to student sites for practicum supervision is required. Travel reimbursement is provided as per TSOE travel policy guidelines 

Required Education and Experience:

The School of Education offers doctoral degree (i.e., Ed.D. and Ph.D.) programs and 43 master’s degree programs that accommodate career changers, field changers, and those who seek expertise and/or certification in the areas of Adolescent Education, Childhood Education, Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Early Childhood Education, Literacy, School Building Leadership, School Counseling, Special Education, and TESOL. Our programs are designed to be flexible, with online and traditional schedules.

The Counselor Education department currently offers two M.S.Ed. programs, in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) and School Counseling (SCH). The department also offers two advanced certificates in SCH and CMHC. Courses are offered on our Queens campus and online during evening hours to accommodate working professionals. All master’s programs are accredited by the Council on the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), and approved for the graduate student option by the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). The MSEd in SCH meets New York state education requirements for initial certification as a School Counselor. The MSEd in CMHC meets New York state education requirements for the limited permit in License in Mental Health Counseling (LMHC), as well as the Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Use Counselor in Training (CASAC-T). Responsibilities

The department is seeking faculty candidates who can support the growth of new and existing graduate programs within the Counselor Education department. We are seeking candidates with the ability to teach in both the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling programs. The faculty member will have a strong Counselor identity, be familiar with CACREP standards, and have a commitment to maintaining both our Counselor identity and CACREP accreditation. Faculty should have active engagement with the profession, at either the local, state, or national level. The faculty member should have a demonstrated understanding of expanding and emerging trends in counseling, including multiculturalism and social justice, telemental health, crisis/trauma, neuroscience, and addictions, as well as advocacy for the profession, clients, and students.

Faculty member responsibilities include teaching, research/scholarship, and service. Tenure-track faculty will teach a three-three course load, with the option of teaching summer for additional compensation. The faculty member will teach on both the Queens campus and online and will be required to complete training in online instruction. They will be required to keep office hours and attend meetings/events on campus. This is not a remote position. The faculty member will provide individualized academic advising to students. The faculty member will engage in scholarly research and publication in the field of professional Counseling. The faculty member will participate in departmental, school, and university-wide committee work, and will serve as the advisor or liaison to department specific initiatives as appropriate (e.g, CSI, NBCC, NYS, CACREP, etc.). The faculty member will utilize technology to its fullest extent to support our students, programs, and administration.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Candidates must have an earned doctoral degree in Counselor Education, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program; candidates with ABD status and scheduled degree completion by December 2024 will be considered.
  • Candidates must have a master’s degree in a counseling specialization, such as School Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling, or other CACREP specialization. Masters degrees beyond Counseling cannot be considered.

Required Counseling Experience:

  • Candidates should have a minimum of three to five years of post-masters professional counseling experience, with a preference for candidates that are fully licensed and/or certified in their Counseling field of expertise.

Required Skills and Characteristics:

  • Communication: Public speaking and teaching/training. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Research: Capacity to builid and maintain a scholarly research agenda, including peer reviewed publications, presentations, and external funding
  • Technology: Including administrative functions (e.g. email, Microsoft office products, videoconferencing software) and teaching functions (e.g. learning management systems, interactive teaching technologies), and emerging technology
  • Personal characteristics: Ethical, inclusive, collaborative, team-player, student-advocate

Preferred Qualifications: 

The following qualifications are preferred:

  • Doctoral and Master’s degree from CACREP accredited programs
  • Teaching experience at the graduate level
  • Licensure and/or certification in School Counseling or Clinical Mental Health Counseling
  • Experience supervising master’s level counselors or interns
  • Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential
  • Prior peer reviewed publications, conference presentations, or securing grant funding
  • Familiarity with CACREP accreditation
  • Experience with external partnerships
