Get to Know Us

The mutual goal of both faculty and University Career Services is student success. By working together, we can ensure that the transition from student to professional is as seamless as possible.

Think of the path our students take to their professional career as a camping trip. Our faculty does an outstanding job of "filling the students' backpacks" with the knowledge and practical skills they need to thrive once they reach their destination. At University Career Services, we provide the maps and compasses, and serve as guides for students conducting their career exploration.

How can we help you? The following are some of the services we offer:

  • We help your students find the right fit—We help students determine the right career for their interests, career goals, skills, values and personality. During their academic careers, students return to Career Services to develop essential job-search skills. We are a student's best resource for job outlook, salary and employment trend information.
  • We know employers who want to know you—At Career Services, we work directly with employers, who often ask for the contact information of faculty members who could help them to target students in a particular major or discipline. Ideally, employers would like to develop mutually beneficial relationships with faculty, and can provide many forms of support.
  • Our career fairs attract many recruiters to one event—Our career fairs provide excellent opportunities for your students to meet representatives from the companies in their industries of choice and establish a network of contacts. We will help your students research the employers beforehand and provide tips so they are prepared to effectively engage recruiters.
  • We help students master the job interview—There is no better way to prepare for the job interview than by experiencing an "actual" interview. At Career Services, our staff will conduct mock interviews with your students, then provide a constructive critique of their performance and effective interview strategies.
  • We'll bring the information to your class—We specialize in conducting presentations to the classes you teach and the student organizations you advise about a host of career-related topics, such as resume writing, job-search strategies and interviewing skills. In addition, we can arrange presentations by professionals (many of them alumni), who can relate their experiences and how their major has helped them in their careers.
  • We assist in identifying quality experiential education opportunities—Experiential education is such an important part of your students' overall educational experience. Just ask any employer. Through our network of employers, we can help your students identify internship and experiential opportunities that will best serve them in their academic and professional pursuits.

These are just some of the services we offer. Please call University Career Services to determine how, together, we can support student success. We look forward to working with you.

How You Can Help

Students

  • Refer students to University Career Services for assistance with career development and employment issues and questions.
  • Encourage your students to set up their profile on Handshake (St. John's Recruiting Platform) for both internships and jobs via St.John's SignOn - click on the Handshake icon.
  • Invite us to speak in your classes at all levels to discuss career-related information aligned to your academic discipline.

Alumni

  • Remind your majors that after graduation they will be in the position to mentor students in the classes behind them. For more information on how alumni can get involved with career services see our mentoring opportunities.

Employers

  • Collect information about internships related to your major. Share this information with University Career Services.
  • Refer any employer you meet who is interested in your academic program and your students to University Career Services and Handshake. If possible, share their contact information with Career Services for a follow-up contact.
  • Attend on-campus programs hosted by visiting recruiters who are hiring your majors. This kind of interest on the part of faculty goes a long way toward cementing bonds between organizations and the University.
  • When your department hosts a visiting speaker or a seminar with outside experts, find out if the speakers will talk with students interested in pursuing the same careers. If so, inform Career Services and we will work with you to make arrangements for this type of networking.

Mentoring Opportunities

ASPIRE Mentor Program

The St. John’s University Aspire Mentor Program supports ambitious students who are striving to reach their professional goals through a one-on-one mentor relationship. Throughout this year long program, alumni mentors guide their mentees as they work to develop career-related competencies, learn about their industry of interest, and build confidence in their ability to achieve success. Mentors connect either in person or virtually 1-2 times per month regarding the students’ progress toward their goals, and other topics related to their professional development. This is an opportunity to truly make a difference in a student’s life and help them to launch their career. Learn More

St. John's Career Services on LinkedIn

St. John's Career Services under 'Company' is the official group of Career Services at St. John's University on LinkedIn. The group compliments the ASPIRE Mentor program providing a forum for building strong student-alumni relationships, as well as peer-to-peer connections.

As alumni, employers and friends, we are asking you to volunteer to assist St. John’s students and fellow grads through the career exploration and job search processes. St. John's Career Services LinkedIn page is not a job placement service. Rather, it’s an opportunity to for students to build a network of connections, to gather information about employment trends, job functions, salary expectations, effective job/internship searches, and the career paths of St. John’s alumni.
