International House

The International House – SJU initiative is the first step towards becoming a global citizen at home and abroad through an innovative, exciting academic experience and co-curricular opportunities that prepare students for service, and professional life.

This initiative is part of the strategic priorities of the University and it is a synergy of several entities such as the St John’s College Dean’s office (with faculty involved), Provost’s office/Global Initiatives-Office of Global Studies, Residence Life, Global Language and Culture Center.

  • Some of the activities for the students include: Language tables, Cultural events, and Academic events.
  • OGS info sessions: Global Passport courses, Semester study abroad, internships abroad
  • Fulbright, Boren, etc info sessions.
  • Career services sessions for international opportunities

Goals

In DaSilva and O'Connor Halls, we have created a community that allows students to explore global opportunities that are available while studying at St. John’s and after graduation.

This community enables students to:

  • Live with like-minded students as they focus on gaining a better understanding of important global issues
  • Engage in some of the world’s cultures by participating in targeted activities including service learning and language tables (Chinese, French, and Spanish)
  • Improve their language skills
  • Prepare for study abroad and fellowships with cross-disciplinary internships abroad
  • Explore global opportunities available after graduation such as the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program, Rhodes Scholarships, and Marshall Scholarships
  • Prepare for international careers with resume writing and mock interviews

Living side-by-side with like-minded students and practicing the language of their choice in our international communities, in an environment promoting academic excellence, partners across the University enhance students’ understanding of important global issues and prepare students for success at St. John’s University and beyond. In addition, this initiative seeks to improve retention, increase majors and minors in second language, literature and culture, and increase students’ global studies participation.

Opportunities for students at the International floors:

Resident Assistant: As a Resident Assistant (RA), you will be serving as a mentor, role model, and community builder, as well as supporting resident students and the St. John's community. RAs receive training in areas such as conflict resolution, communication, crisis response, event planning, and team development. Learn about becoming an RA.

Language tutor: Visit the Global Language and Culture Center on campus!

Global Ambassador: The Global Studies Student Ambassador Program is an exciting leadership program designed to give Study Abroad alumni the chance to share their experiences with the St. John's community as well as those students who are considering a study abroad program. Global Ambassadors serve as liaisons to the student population to keep them informed of Study Abroad events on campus through various Global Studies information sessions, table days, etc. The program will also offer Ambassadors the chance to pitch and sponsor Global Studies events.
