The School of Education

Doctoral Fellows in the Department are assigned to work with faculty members on research projects currently in progress. Fellows may conduct research at schools within the local area including data collection, instructional research with school-age students, professional development of teachers, and other related activities.

They may also engage in research within the department including statistical and qualitative data analysis, mentoring beginning graduate students, and preparing research projects for presentation and publication. Fellows may assist faculty in teaching graduate classes, where appropriate.

Fellows work 18-20 hrs. per week.

Graduate students in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction engage in research pertinent to the Early Childhood, Childhood, and Adolescent Education programs in conjunction with the program faculty. Research includes collection and review of relevant literature, compiling bibliographies, designing program brochures, gathering faculty data for the department newsletter, and typing of preliminary reports. 

The graduate assistants also support faculty who work on grants, compiling and in some cases creating the materials for global initiatives and conferences.

Graduate students in the Department of Human Services and Counseling engage in research pertinent to the Counseling, Literacy, Special Education and TESOL programs in conjunction with the program faculty. Research includes collection and review of relevant literature, compiling, bibliographies, designing web pages, entering data, scoring pre- and post tests, holistically scoring writing samples, and typing of preliminary reports.

The graduate assistants support faculty who work on grants, compiling and in some cases creating the materials for workshops and conferences. They accompany the faculty to the research sites where they administer research surveys, pre-post testing, and even demonstrate lessons. In some cases the graduate assistants conduct diagnostic evaluations for students and adults. They engage in tutoring of young children at the research sites and attend our faculty forum sessions when faculty are presenting their research.

Students engage in research pertinent to the discipline, either for the department or in conjunction with a specific faculty member. Research might include collection and review of relevant literature, compiling bibliographies, summarizing assigned readings relevant to the field of study, assisting in the design of methodologies, writing of student handbooks, and collecting and entering data. Students commit time weekly to student success initiatives (i.e. tutoring, mentoring, student conferences, focus groups or assessment).

Graduate Assistants who work in the Dean's office may have the following responsibilities:

1. Undergraduate Support for School of Education ePortfolio program
   • Coordinates workshops
   • Supports students with technical issues with ePortfolio
   • Conducts undergraduate workshops
   • Liaison between the Undergraduate Associate Dean and the ePortfolio  team
2. Research and Data Analysis in distance learning and educational technology in Catholic School
   • Literature Researcher in above areas
   • Checks data
3. Miscellaneous Administrative Assistant Tasks
   • Filing etc.
