3MT is a platform which challenges graduate students to talk about their thesis in 180 seconds. It helps students compress their data and focus it on important aspects of their research without much deviation, along with improve their communication and presentation skills

  • Competitors are limited to a single, static PowerPoint slide. No animations of any kind will be allowed.
  • No sounds or other media files
  • No laboratory equipment or models
  • Students will be judged by eminent scientists in academia and industry
  • Deadline to register as a presenter is November 11, 2020
  • Deadline to register as an attendee is  November 16, 2020

Judging Criteria

Comprehension and Content

  • Understand the background and significance to the research question being addressed.
  • Explain terminology and avoid jargon.
  • Be clear in describing the impact and/or results of the research, including conclusions and outcomes.
  • Your presentation must have a clear and logical sequence.
  • Adequate time must be spent on each element of the presentation. Are you covering your points too quickly? Are you stretching a particular topic?

Engagement and Communication

  • Competitors must demonstrate polished oratory skills.
  • Avoid trivialization and generalization.
  • Express enthusiasm for your work.
  • Hold the audience's attention.
  • Sufficient stage presence, eye contact, and vocal range must be exhibited. Maintain a steady pace and have a confident stance.
  • Your PowerPoint slide must be clear, legible, and concise.


  • Doctor of Philosophy students much have passed the comprehensive exams.
  • Master of Sciences students must be at least in the 2nd year and must have started their research work under adviser's guidance.
