School Building Leadership, Master of Science in Education
The graduate programs in Educational Administration enable educators to acquire scholarly knowledge, technical skills, intellectual curiosity and legal and ethical awareness in order to make a positive contribution in the organization and administration of public and nonpublic schools. The programs seek to produce informed leaders whose expertise will be well grounded in theory to support their efforts to deal with varied issues and problems in the school setting and to make innovative contributions to the reform and restructuring of current educational practice.
St. John’s is also committed to being a leader in technology. We offer one of the first completely online degrees for a School Building Leader Master’s and a District-Leader Advanced Certificate, recognized by New York State.
Permanent Teaching Certification in an Administrator’s Degree
The degree includes a subject-matter concentration that can qualify teachers for both permanent teaching certification as well as building-level administrative certification. If a teacher already has permanent certification they may specialize in an additional area such as Gifted & Talented Education, Special Education, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Instructional Technology, or Curriculum Studies.

Please view the School of Education Graduate Admission Application Requirements for detailed admission information. Qualified applicants must meet the following requirements for admission into the program:
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
- Normally a 3.0 GPA in the general average and in the major field
- Minimum of one year of successful teaching experience and/or pupil personnel services
- New York State Initial Teaching Certification
Earn Your Degree Online
Pursue your St. John’s degree entirely on your computer. Our fully accredited Online Learning programs allow you to take courses electronically. Log in at your convenience to enter our virtual classrooms, learn from our accomplished faculty, and engage with classmates.
Our online courses offer the same high academic quality that students experience on campus. Professors deliver lectures and post assignments via Blackboard, our electronic course management system. - Demonstrate knowledge of the function of instructional supervision within the overall organizational structure of schools.
- Identify the distinct instructional and leadership roles of supervisors working with classroom teachers that support and sustain effective learning environments for students and staff.
- Illustrate selected supervisory techniques and strategies and their advantages and disadvantages.
- Critique the effectiveness of formative and summative evaluation in the supervision process.

Understand the knowledge and skills required of school leaders.
