Eligibility Requirements
Applications are open to highly qualified, full-time students who identify as female, who are US citizens or permanent residents and not intending to pursue further education in the medical or health sciences (e.g., dental, nursing, pharmacy, physician, physician assistant, or premed). Only the following majors are eligible:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Computer and Information Science
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Toxicology
Research Scholarships
The summer research project should be full time, and last at least eight to 10 weeks with a faculty mentor. It includes
- a $3,800 stipend to be awarded in installments. The final installment in the amount of $800 will be paid in April, following your presentation at St. John’s research day. Presentation at research day is a requirement for this award.
- up to a $1,000 professional development fund to be used by the following June for supplies, travel, research, etc. This fund requires preapproval of all expenses; the funds cannot be used for travel outside the United States.
- NO TUITION.
In accepting the award, you agree to
- continue in your major
- be enrolled at St. Johns for an academic year
- maintain a 3.5 GPA
- continue research in your field
- write weekly reports signed by your mentor and submit them to the Women in Science coordinators
- present at research day in April 2025 and submit on outcomes of your research during the year
- after graduating, provide a three-year follow-up report on career and educational achievements.
In addition to basic personal information, the application should include the following (in separate documents): a research proposal, a budget for your project, your CV or résumé, an unofficial transcript, and two letters of recommendation from St. John’s faculty members (one of which is from your mentor).
The application submission deadline (including all required materials, attachments, and recommendations) is Friday, April 19, 2024. Submit everything to the coordinators, attention: Women in Science, Newman Hall, Room 106, or email all documents to [email protected] and enter: CBL Summer Research Scholarship in the subject line.

Clare Boothe Luce was truly a Renaissance woman. Her remarkable career spanned seven decades and nearly as many professional interests: journalism, politics, diplomacy, and the theater. In each of those fields she excelled. In each, she broke new paths for women to follow.
Not content with her achievements, Ms. Luce was always eager to consider new topics, to test new hypotheses, and to encourage other women to achieve their own potential. Characteristically, she declined to restrict her vision to the fields in which she had established her reputation. Under the terms of her will, she chose instead to establish the legacy which is now known as the Clare Boothe Luce Fund and which will benefit current and future generations of women with talent and ambition in areas where, in our society, they continue to be underrepresented.
St. John’s University, which awarded Ms. Luce an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree in 1964, was designated in her will as one of the beneficiaries of the Clare Boothe Luce Fund. St. John’s University is one of 13 educational institutions specifically designated in Ms. Luce’s will to receive the income from an initial allocation in perpetuity.
