Middle School Certification in Childhood Education (1-6) Certificate Extension to Grades 7, 8, and 9, Advanced Certificate

Responding to the most current middle school needs, teachers who are certified to teach adolescent or childhood education may expand their career opportunities by earning our new Middle School Extension Advanced Certificate. You will not only be eligible to teach a wider range of grades, you will also gain knowledge of current best practices related to middle level education. These practices prepare you to create teaching and learning experiences based on the unique characteristics of middle school children.

Courses

Extension of childhood education certification to middle school grades 7-9 is granted after successfully completing EDU 7106/ 7107. Students must also complete 30 credit hours with a C or better in one content area, as well as pass the New York State Content Specialty Test (CST) in the same subject area.

Career Outcomes

Secondary school teachers are qualified for a broader range of positions. Hiring teachers with such flexibility is especially appealing to principals who are starting new small middle schools and schools with a 6-12 model. Since there are currently as many as 856 middle schools in New York State, the employment opportunities for teachers possessing middle school certification expand exponentially.
