Kathleen K. Marks

Associate Professor
Kathleen Marks, PhD, is the Chair and Associate Professor in the Division of English and Speech, at the Collins College of Professional Studies, St. John’s University.
Dr. Marks received her doctorate from the University of Dallas. Her book, Toni Morrison’s Beloved and the Apotropaic Imagination (University of Missouri Press, 2003) explores an intersection between African-American literature and ancient Greek religion. She has written articles on classical and modern works of literature such as Homer’s Odyssey, Vergil’s Aeneid, Shakespeare's Hamlet, Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, and Neil Gaiman’s Coraline. In addition to supporting St. John’s students by teaching Literature in a Global Context, she has also developed special topics courses on the Medusa, hoarding, and the lyric. Kathleen lives in Queens; her husband is an English Professor at Hostos Community College in the Bronx; and her daughter attends a Catholic high school in Manhattan.
