Dr. Alan Lam comes to St. John's University as an Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Dr. Lam has worked extensively in private practice during his career as a physical therapist, specializing in musculoskeletal and orthopaedic physical therapy. He has successfully completed internationally-recognized manual therapy education from Canada and the US, becoming both a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Orthopaedic Manual and Manipulative Therapy and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists, the highest awards bestowed upon an orthopaedic manual physical therapist.

In addition to maintaining clinical practice in an orthopaedic private practice setting, Dr. Lam provides mentorship for physical therapists pursuing post-graduate fellowship training in orthopaedic manual therapy. He believes that successful rehabilitation can be achieved only when a person is treated as a whole, rather than treating isolated units of dysfunction. In his teachings, he emphasizes the importance of conducting thorough comprehensive assessments, utilizing clinical reasoning, and approaching problems as a quadrant, especially in patients experiencing longstanding pain. Dr. Lam is a board-certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist and has taken an interest in studying the role of spinal dysfunction and its peripheral manifestations. He has presented at conferences and podcasts for Canada’s national dance educators on the relationship between chronic spinal dysfunction and the incidence of lower extremity injuries. He continues to maintain active clinical practice and service through involvement with the St. John’s athletics department and community outreach programs.
