Della DeKay, Ed.D., J.D. is an Associate Professor, Department of Educational Specialties. Prior to becoming a full-time faculty member she was an adjunct at St. John’s for 10 years. Her research interest is developing methods for teaching TESOL within the legal, social and cultural context encountered by new immigrants. She earned her M.A. and Ed.D. at Teachers College, Columbia University.

Teaching Interests

Over 20% of the students in New York public city schools are newcomers. To reach these students, teachers must be aware of the cultural and sociological factors which impact how students assimilate and acculturate into American society.

Research Interests

Exploring how the economic realities of living in New York City affect newcomers' performance in schools. Specifically, how does the shortage of affordable housing affect the way that newcomers assimilate?
