Brook A. Lauro, Ph.D.

Associate Professor

A main focus of my teaching and research is on the evolution and protection of biodiversity. My area of expertise is the ecology and conservation of waterbirds. I am currently examining predatory threats upon endangered Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) at Orient Beach State Park, New York. Information gained from my research, and that of others, is integrated into lectures and activities. A focus for teaching is helping non-major biology students appreciate the natural world from a scientific as well as aesthetic point of view. Inquiry based and hands on pedagogical techniques are utilized in the classroom. An emphasis is placed upon the use of computer technologies. A current teaching interest is utilizing citizen science for student learning.
