Karen Smolar began working at The Bronx Defenders in 2000 after working as a public defender and then in private practice as a criminal trial attorney. She has been a staff attorney, a team leader and is now Trial Chief of The Bronx Defenders. She is responsible for trial training, supervision and trial preparation with attorneys across all practice areas. Smolar created and is the director of The Defenders' Academy, an intensive holistic trial training program for public and private attorneys across the nation. Smolar was an adjunct professor at Seton Hall Law School where she taught Persuasion and Advocacy for many years. She is also on the faculty at the National Criminal Defense College in Macon Georgia, the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, has lectured on various topics for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, The New York State Defenders Association. She has been a guest trainer at various state-wide public defender training programs.
