A main focus of Dr. Lauro’s teaching and research is evolution and protection of biodiversity with expertise in ecology and conservation of waterbirds. A current research project is examining predatory threats upon endangered Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) nesting at Orient Beach State Park, New York. A primary teaching goal is to help students appreciate the natural world from a scientific as well as an aesthetic point of view. Inquiry based and hands on pedagogical techniques are utilized in the classroom. A recent interest is citizen science for student learning.
