College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

The College Board offers you the opportunity to receive college credit by taking a CLEP exam (College Level Examination Program).

There are 33 exams in the following five subject areas: literature and composition; history and social science; mathematics and science; business; and foreign languages (French, German, and Spanish).

Depending on which exam you take, you can earn 3-9 college credits. On the College Board web site, clep.collegeboard.org/exam you will be able to view exam details, try sample questions, and get additional study resources.

At St. John’s University, we offer the exams every Monday and Wednesday during the Fall and Spring Semesters, at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., as long as the University is open. Please contact the office for summer hours. Each exam is a 90-minute, computer based exam, except for College Composition which is 120 minutes. The cost of each CLEP exam is $89 plus an additional $50 processing fee to St. John’s University.

Attention St. John’s University students:

You must receive clearance from the Dean before scheduling an exam, if you are a St. John's University Undergraduate Student. If you do not receive approval from the Dean you are at risk of not receiving credit for the CLEP exam.

$50 processing fee to St. John’s University:

Appointments must be made in person.
Cash or money order payable to St. John’s University.
To make an appointment you must leave a $25 deposit.
The remaining $25 must be paid the day of the exam.
If you are taking multiple exams there is a fee of $50 per exam.

The exam costs a total of $139 split into TWO SEPARATE PAYMENTS.

DSST Exams

Exam Fee ($85.00): MUST be paid credit card (No Discover Card) or Credit/ Debit card day of your exam

Attention St. John’s University students:

No photocopies or pictures of your ID will be accepted on the day of the exam, this will delay taking the exam.
Bring the remaining payment of $25 either in cash or money order payable to St. John’s University.
For Language Exams, you will need to bring headphones.
Please arrive 20 minutes prior to the exam.

CLEP Exams

Please remember to print out the exam registration ticket, which can be accessed through “My Account” registration portal on College Board website. Bring it on the day of the exam. No CLEP ticket saved on cell phones will be accepted, paper copies only.

DSST Exams

Must have a credit card (No Discover Card) or Credit/ Debit card to pay for exam
Due to Prometric policies, there are add security measure before seating for your exam

The Testing Office must be notified 24 hours in advance if you need to reschedule an appointment (please have a new date in mind) or you will lose your deposit. You are permitted to reschedule your appointment twice. Rescheduling more than twice will result in an additional deposit fee of $25.

If you do not pass the exam that you have scheduled, you must wait 90 days before rescheduling that specific CLEP exam or 30 days before rescheduling that specific DSST exam. You may, however, schedule any other exam.
