A native of Seattle, WA, Mohammed Jagana '18C came to the East Coast to study at St. John's University because he wanted to immerse himself in New York City. Four years later, he is experiencing life on another continent as a Fulbright Scholar in the Netherlands.
After watching his mother’s daily struggles as an immigrant from Haiti to the United States, Porez Luxama '03C felt a need to provide greater services to his community. Along with his brother Fr. Juan Luxama, he co-founded the Life of Hope Center, a community-based nonprofit organization that supports immigrants in the Central Brooklyn community, and now serves as its Executive Director.
Sarah Guayante '17C is well on her way to making valuable contributions to the field of eighteenth-century studies in English. She has been accepted to several prestigious Ph.D. programs and has been offered top-tier fellowships to attend those schools. Now, having made her selection, Ms. Guayante will attend Yale University in the fall, specializing in eighteenth-century studies.
For Talissa J. Rodriguez, the skills she developed as a Communication Arts major and student leader at St. John’s University have proven useful in a field she never expected to enter. “Essentially, I have become a social worker,” she said. “It was not until I graduated that I realized—this is my calling.”

During freshman year, she immersed herself in service projects such as Midnight Runs and began studying with the University’s Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults group. She was eventually baptized and confirmed into the Catholic faith at the end of her freshman year.
