On Sunday, September 19, 2021, at 7:00 am, four students, 3 female and one male, while walking on Goethals Ave towards 170 street were approached by a white van, pictured below. Two of the female students continued to walk entering the campus. One female student and one male student were engaged in conversation by the operator of the van. The operator of the van exited the vehicle and held his hand on his right waistline simulating he had a weapon. The male demanded the money from the male student and the student complied. The female student realizing that a robbery was occurring fled to gate 6 and alerted an employee. The passenger of the van then approached the male student and searched his pockets demanding the student’s cellphone. The student complied and was instructed to unlock the phone. The male then fled in the white van westbound on Goethals Ave toward 168 street. The students were not injured.
If this van is observed, notify 911 and Public Safety at 718-990-5252 as soon as possible.
The New York City Police Department responded and are investigating. Public Safety is assisting with this investigation.
Remember to always be cognizant of your surroundings and walk with others whenever possible. If you are alone, do not wear headphones when you walk. Similarly, if you observe any type of suspicious activity, immediately notify 911 and Public Safety.
Public Safety is excited to introduce the community to our new mobile safety app, LiveSafe.
LiveSafe allows app users to report tips to Public Safety, virtually escort friends in real-time on a map, place emergency calls, and access other safety resources. It is free for all University members.
