Scripture of the Day: DT 30: 15-20; LK 9: 22-25
As we enter into this season of Lent, it is an opportunity for us to think again about what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ and to reflect on Jesus’ radical call to discipleship. Not everyone who heard Jesus preach chose to follow him; many turned away sad and disappointed because they were not prepared to deny themselves—to take up their cross and follow him.
The Christian life can be tough and challenging, but it is only when we live for Jesus that we discover life as it is meant to be lived.
Ultimately, Jesus alone meets our deepest needs. Today’s first reading lays out our options: to give into the temptations of the world or to follow the Lord and enjoy everlasting life.
In the pursuit of athletic excellence, an individual sacrifices short-term pleasure and endures pain for a future good—a championship. How many of us are willing to make this sacrifice for an earthly pleasure but are not willing to make a similar sacrifice for a greater good—eternal life with our Creator? Today and throughout the season of Lent, let us look deeply into our souls and make a conscious effort to actively seek the ultimate good: salvation.
