Students from St. John’s University are invited to join thousands of other New York college students at the annual New York Student Aid Alliance Advocacy Day scheduled for Tuesday, February 14, at the New York State (NYS) Capitol in Albany, NY.
The annual event convenes New York State students, faculty, financial aid program administrators, legislators, and higher education policymakers to dialogue and show support for student aid funding and higher education. The alliance is a coalition of New York State private, not-for-profit, and public campuses and their students and stakeholder organizations who support funding vital student aid programs for students in New York State.
The gathering will be held inside the Legislative Office Building from 10:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Round-trip bus transportation departs the Queens, NY, campus at 7 a.m. and returns that evening at approximately 7 p.m.
“The trip is free—and the experience is priceless,” stated Brian Browne, Associate Vice President of University Communications and Public Affairs, who regularly coordinates St. John’s participation.
Attendees will share stories with members of the state Legislature—including legislators who are St. John’s alumni—and advocate for state funding to strengthen aid for students and opportunity programs. While the trip is open to all students, native New Yorkers who receive financial aid from the state will be most interested in the discussion.
The Tuition Assistance Program, Higher Education Opportunity Program, Science and Technology Entry Program, Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program, Liberty Partnerships Program, and the Enhanced Tuition Awards program are just a few of the programs available to New York students. Approximately 370,000 college students in New York rely on state financial aid programs to make college education more accessible and affordable.
Founded in 1956, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities represents more than 100 private, not-for-profit colleges and universities located here in New York State. Together, independent sector campuses educate nearly 500,000 students and are responsible for more than 400,000 jobs statewide.
New York State’s independent sector is the largest in the country; New York is the leading destination for first-time students who leave their home state to attend private, not-for-profit colleges. More of these students choose New York than any other state.
