The Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Management, Insurance and Actuarial Science (GSRM), part of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business at St. John’s University, is presently accepting applications for the 2022 Harold Jackson Scholarship for the study of ocean marine insurance in London, England.

Established under the will of the late Harold Jackson, former President of Wm. H. McGee & Company, Inc., the scholarship consists of round-trip transportation to London, lodging costs for a stay of up to two weeks, payment of tuition and fees for the course of study to be determined by the scholarship recipient, and a personal allowance for miscellaneous living expenses.

The scholarship is awarded based on successful completion of the AMIM® 121 examination, prepared and graded by The Institutes™, and a completed application and written report of not more than 1,000 words on the following three-part topic, submitted by May 31, 2022:

  1. Briefly describe the difference in coverages in the following policies:

    Boat Dealer’s versus Marina Operator’s
    Commercial Yacht versus Personal Yacht
    Cargo Owner versus Cargo Liability

  2. There are multiple types of deductibles which an underwriter can apply to a commercial marine hull policy. List and define in detail three deductible types.

  3. Reinsurance continues to play a vital role in maintaining and supporting capacity to the U.S. market. In your opinion, what are three major factors that a reinsurer should consider when deciding to support a marine insurance program/cedant?

GSRM was founded in 1901 as the Insurance Society of New York and decades later became The College of Insurance (TCI). In June of 2001, TCI merged with St. John’s University, becoming a School within The Peter J. Tobin College of Business.

St. John’s awards undergraduate, M.B.A., and M.S. degrees in the insurance, risk management, and actuarial science disciplines. Through its Tobin Center for Executive Education, the University also provides education, training, and consulting services to industry, governments, and regulators worldwide. GSRM is also home to the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Library, which houses the largest and most comprehensive insurance collection in the world.
