Update on COVID-19

March 9, 2020

We recognize that the concerns about coronavirus (COVID-19) are escalating across the tri-state region and creating anxious moments for our community. We recognize that this is an anxiety-inducing time for many people both here and abroad. It has come to our attention that there are a few topics that require clarification:

  • There are no reported confirmed cases of COVID-19 on any of our St. John’s campuses.
  • Students that returned from study abroad in Rome were asked to self-isolate at home for 14 days. None of these students have reported symptoms. Self-isolation is a precautionary measure for this group recommended by health officials.
  • Students returning from spring break who traveled to an affected region were asked to remain home and self-isolate for 14 days. We have one case where we are assisting the student with self-isolation at an off-campus location. We had one additional student who was assisted with self-isolation for the first day at an off-campus location and then went home to complete the 14-day self-isolation period. Neither of these students are exhibiting any symptoms. Again, they are following precautionary measures.
  • Out of an abundance of caution, the University had an external company engage in a thorough cleaning of the two spaces on campus that these individuals used prior to self-isolating. Again, these individuals do not have symptoms and were asked to self-isolate out of an abundance of caution. To be clear, this cleaning did not occur because of a COVID-19 confirmed/presumptive case.
  • Thank you to students and faculty that have voluntarily self-isolated out of an abundance of caution regarding potentially elevated risk factors relating to activities where they have, or may have, been exposed to individuals who are ill. We appreciate your transparency and heightened sense of responsibility.
  • We are aware of one student being tested for COVID-19. This individual is in self-quarantine off-campus at home.

It is important as a community that we avoid contributing to the spreading of rumors. As such, we wish to remind you that any important alerts or updates will be communicated via St. John’s email and posted to the web, which includes frequently asked questions. It is critical that all New Yorkers exercise caution, but also focus on the facts and guidance being shared by local, state and federal authorities and that we calibrate those facts and information in real-time.

The University has setup a COVID-19 page to post communications and up-to-date information regarding the University’s measures to ensure the health and safety of the members of our community at www.stjohns.edu/coronavirus. The safety and well-being of our students and the entire University community are of primary importance to the leadership team at St. John's.
