Home Court Advantage: Men’s Basketball Sees Attendance Boost

The St. John’s University Men’s Basketball team sold out all five of its BIG EAST home games at Carnesecca Arena, and seven of its last eight contests overall played on campus. 

With pregame receptions, student pep rallies, and a family-friendly environment, Carnesecca Arena is a destination for fans of college basketball in the metropolitan region. In 12 matchups this season hosted in Queens, NY, the arena was filled to 95.3 percent of its overall capacity. Since the Johnnies’ first sellout of the season on Dec. 16 against Wagner College, the facility was filled to 98.9 percent of its overall capacity. 

The Red Storm experienced a similar rise in attendance at its other basketball home, “The World’s Most Famous Arena.” In five home games during the regular season at Madison Square Garden (MSG), the Johnnies averaged 16,498 fans, the program’s highest mark since welcoming 17,197 fans per game during St. John’s legendary Hall of Fame member Lou Carnesecca ’50C, ’60GEd, ’00HON’s final season coaching the team in 1991–92. Attendance at Madison Square Garden has risen every year since 2015.
