Domestic Violence and Safer Schools Workshops Hosted by Chi Sigma Iota International Honor Society Chapter

July 27, 2017

Sigma Tau Upsilon Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, an international counseling academic and professional honor society, hosted two workshops.

Domestic Violence Workshop. They hosted “Domestic Violence: Beyond the Obvious” for students in our M.S.Ed. in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs. The workshop was conducted by Christina DiBernardo, Coordinator of the SHARP program at a nonprofit agency in Suffolk County. Ms. DiBernardo is also an advanced student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. The program was well attended and rich with content that would be applicable in any setting.

Safer Schools Workshop.  In conjunction with Spectrum and KDP, the chapter hosted a workshop entitled, “Creating Safer Schools for LGBT Young People,” for students on campus. Representatives from the LGBT Center spoke to a packed room of students in the School Counseling and CMHC program, on statistics, strategies, and approaches to creating safer school communities for LGBT students, as administrators and counselors in the school setting.

Lyndsay Smith from the LGBT Center speaks to students in the School Counseling and CMHC programs about the importance of creating safer schools for all students.
