Now in its second season, the cable television series Sharing Knowledge, presented by St. John’s University, continues to bring insightful explorations of secular and religious issues in education and society to audiences throughout the New York metropolitan area.
Conrado “Bobby” Gempesaw, Ph.D., President of St. John’s, hosts the series, which airs on the Telecare Catholic Television Network and its affiliates. In each episode, Dr. Gempesaw addresses today’s headlines with national experts and thought leaders, including University faculty and administrators. Students’ voices also are heard as Dr. Gempesaw and his guests consider their questions at the close of each show.
“Sharing Knowledge continues to serve as an effective tool for promoting timely discussions about issues of importance to the New York metropolitan area’s large Catholic audience,” said Dr. Gempesaw.
Season two premiered on January 25, 2017, by examining “The Value of a Catholic Education.” Dr. Gempesaw’s guests were Kathleen Walsh '93MLS, '01Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, NY, and Patrick McLaughlin '95GEd, Principal of St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens, NY. In another broadcast, Dr. Gempesaw discussed “Developing Young Catholic Leaders” with Joanne Heaney-Hunter, Ph.D. '78C, '81G, Associate Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at St. John’s, and Paul Morisi '14G, Coordinator of Adolescent and Young Adult Faith Formation in the Diocese of Brooklyn and Queens.
The series also explored the cultural, pedagogical, and technological changes facing today’s academic institutions. An episode entitled “The Role of Higher Education in Society” featured Robert Scott, Ph.D., President Emeritus of Adelphi University, and Alice Pope, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology at St. John’s. “Athletics and the College Experience” was the focus of a broadcast featuring BIG EAST Conference Commissioner Valerie Ackerman and Anton Goff, the University’s Director of Athletics.
Technology is one of the forces affecting stability across the globe. Injustice is another. Sharing Knowledge examined both issues. In “Cyber-Security: Risks and Opportunities,” Dr. Gempesaw considered issues of digital safety and privacy, with Katia Passerini, Ph.D., Dean of St. John’s College of Professional Studies, and Steve Antoniewicz, a technology executive and Director of Professional Services at McAfee, part of Intel Security. Later in the season, Dr. Gempesaw welcomed His Eminence Peter Kodwo Appiah Cardinal Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Coast, Ghana, and Kat Johnson, Director of the Institute of Global Homelessness at De Paul University, for an examination of “Global Homelessness and Social Justice.”
Each season contains seven half-hour episodes, including a “best of” broadcast. Individual episodes air on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 10:30 p.m. over several weeks.
