St. John’s University’s Oakdale location hosted the inaugural Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon in support of US veterans on September 13, in which over 3,500 runners competed.

Members of the St. John’s University community, including Johnny Thunderbird, were on hand manning water stations and encouraging runners, including members of the St. John’s University Student Veterans Association.  Brendan McDevitt, and an Air Force veteran, observed, “It was a pleasure to assist and cheer the participants. All of the organizers, runners, and volunteers were so grateful that the student veterans from St. John’s were able to add to the overall success of the event.”

The race was spearheaded by US Army veteran and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone who completed the full marathon.  Over the last year, Brian Browne, assistant vice president for government relations, worked with the Office of the Suffolk County Executive to prepare and promote the campus for the race.

All of the net proceeds from the race will support veteran’s services in Suffolk County, and early reports indicate that the race raised over $100,000.
