Forensic Psychology Postdoctoral Certificate Program Launches at SJU

Tuesday, September 16, 2014

The field of forensic science has grown exponentially in recent years as psychology professionals have played an increasingly important role in criminal investigations and related court testimony. Psychologists and related professionals may be called upon to testify about their clients or to render expert testimony, and those who wish to expand their practices by becoming trained forensic experts may see a substantial increase in their earning capacity. To help prepare professionals for this role, the Department of Psychology, in collaboration with the School of Law, offers a first-of-its-kind certificate program in Forensic Psychology, which launched on May 22, 2014 under the leadership of Rafael Art. Javier, Ph.D. ABPP.

The inaugural class consists of 11 licensed psychologists from four states, including Alaska. In order to accommodate professionals with more experience in the forensic fields, St. John’s is also offering a postdoctoral advanced certificate program in civil and family matters beginning in early 2015, along with the start of the next basic certificate class. Both programs are specifically designed to prepare students for the American Board of Forensic Psychology diplomate examination.

Participants in both tracks of the program are trained to prepare forensic evaluations for various situations and to testify in court. Because it is likely that professionals will encounter a diverse population of clients, the program features a strong emphasis on cultural competence regarding forensic issues. Courses are taught by nationally recognized faculty with expertise in the forensic field, and participants are given a unique court experience in the Law School Moot Court with experienced attorneys.

“It’s a fantastic experience to attend a seminar with a professional who has such a wide range of knowledge and experience in the field of forensic psychology,” said Benito Accomando, Ph.D., a program participant. “I truly enjoyed the presentation and the opportunity to learn so much in such a short time.”
