On December 5, 2008, St. John’s University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) pledging to become an environmental steward by implementing a number of green initiatives that would reduce its carbon footprint and further improve our planet’s environment. This partnership with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and St. John’s University has resulted in reducing energy, water and solid waste production across campus operations.
St. John's seeks to promote sustainability in all aspects, including dining services.
In partnership with Chartwells, the university only purchases the following:
- Locally farmed produce.
- Sustainable fish species.
- Certified humane/cage free eggs.
- Antibiotic free chicken.
- rBGH/rBST (growth hormone) free milk.
- Compostable cutlery, and napkins.
- Fair trade, organic, shade grown, rainforest alliance coffee.

Queens Green Building At A Glance
- The new D’Angelo Center and the classrooms in St. John's Hall incorporate district cooling, advanced lighting systems and controls, demand control ventilation, displacement HVAC and other sustainable features and practices.
- St. Vincent Residence Hall incorporates valance system heating and cooling.
- Most buildings have been upgraded with digital control of mechanical systems.
- Site lighting and parking garages have been upgraded with energy efficient lighting. Roadway and parking lot lighting has been upgraded with LED.
- All buildings (2 million square feet) have been retrofitted with fluorescent lighting upgrades and occupancy controls.
- Most of all roofing systems incorporate reflective coatings
- Storm water retention design has been incorporated into the north east part of campus
- Most science laboratories have been upgraded with high performance fume hoods kits
- Landscaping groundscare is transitioning to organics soils management
- Residence Village (2300 beds) incorporate high efficiency lighting, district cooling, water conservation fixtures and laundries, and web-based Dashboard energy monitoring
Reuse & Recycle
- Use the desk-side recycling containers located at each workstation for mixed paper of all types.
- Use the plastic, metal, glass recycle containers located in corridors and office suites.
- Recycle printer ink cartridges through pickup and drop-off service offered by office of Printing & Distribution.
- Copy and print jobs should be double sided and save waste paper printed on one side for drafts, scratch notes, or other purposes.
- Faxes received and routed should be done electronically when possible.
- Use on-line information sources to avoid printing and filing.
- Purchase / lease office equipment with EnergyStar label.
- Minimize use of throw-away lunch containers, drinking cups and utensils.
- Use pitchers of tap water rather than bottle water for meeting refreshments.
- Inquire about the installation of filtered / tempered tap water system in lieu of dispensed bottled water.
- Bring your own mug to use for water, coffee, tea during the day.
- Turn off computers, printers and copy machines at the end of each day.
- Turn off lights for times you are out of the office for more than 30 minutes...
- Close windows and report overheating /cooling problems to Facilities office.
- Make certain that computer monitors use stand-by mode.
- Reduce the need for business travel through teleconferencing and other strategies.
- Commute to work by public transportation, car-pooling or van-pooling when possible.
- Purchase standard copy paper with 30% post-consumer recycled content.
- Purchase letterhead, envelopes, legal pads and paper towels with 100% post consumer content.
SJU has a goal and plan to achieve and maintain an annual landfill diversion rate of 50%. Work efforts include implementation of Single Stream Recycling, changes in hardware (bins and signage), staff re-training and, on-going community involvement. Diversion rate of 40% achieved for 2013.
RecycleMania is an annual spring semester, eight week nation-wide tournament involving over 400 schools. SJU began competing in RecycleMania 2008 with a 22% diversion rate and has made improvements each year and currently at 43% diversion rate for RecycleMania 2014.

This commitment is rooted in our tradition as a Vincentian University dedicated to promoting the core values of truth, love, respect, opportunity, excellence and service within the University and in our relationships with the community at large. It also serves to complement the University’s Diversity Initiative, which seeks to identify and address personal, institutional and social injustice."
The university strives to purchase sustainable and environmentally friendly products for all aspects of campus; including purchasing Green Seal and/or EcoLogo certified cleaning products where applicable.
St. John’s University began its recycling program in 2002. Since this time the university has:
- Distributed hundreds of recycle containers in the corridors of the Residential Village, academic & administrative buildings.
- Implemented single stream recycling on the Queens campus.
- Increased the amount of classroom recyclying bins in the Queens and Staten Island campus, with updated single stream recycling signage.
- Increased the amount of student workers as Sustainability Coordinators.
- Quantified and reported on the volumes of our recycling efforts.
- Triple the number of recycling stations for every campus building wtih new clearly mark
Other materials that are currently being recycled on our campuses include cardboard, scrap metals, plastic containers, batteries, fluorescent lamps, computer monitors, printer cartages and some furniture.
The Facilities Services Department has responsibility for handling all recycled materials for all campuses. The Office of Facilities Services can be reached by calling ext. 6253.
In order to help lower St. John's Greenhouse Gas Emissions and uphold our partnership with Clean Air Campus, St. John's has made alternate forms of transportation available to all members of the St. John's community. St. John's encourages students and faculty to ride their bicycle to campus, and by placing bike racks around campus it is easier to safely store your bicycle.
For those students and faculty members who live too far to bike, you can either take public transportation or carpool with other students/faculty members who live in the same area. Also our Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island campuses are easily accessible through various trains and buses. The St. John’s offers shuttle bus services to all University students to assist with their transportation needs.
In addition to making our campuses accesible, we also made St John's Queens campus easier and safer for pedestrians to walk. We have eliminated roadways throughout campus, and created extra pathways to navigate campus.
Water conservation measures have been implemented to St. John's Queens campus. Some of these measure include:
- Fitting water restricting shower heads and facuets in the bathrooms of the Residence Village.
- Having front loading washing machines in the laundry facilities.
- The water used to irrigate campus is taken from an artesian well.
- We meter and monitor the water consumption on campus through the NYC Department of Environmental Protection.
- Through St. John's organic soils management planning we brew and spray our own compost tea, which reduces the need to frequently water our grounds.
