"The Hunger of Writing, Writing for Hunger" by Dr. Harry
Denny
During the current global economic recession, as many as one in
every four people experience hunger. In the United States,
the divide between those with privilege and those who struggle to
meet basic human needs grows ever wider. In this discussion,
Dr. Denny will explore hunger as a social justice issue, not just
as a real material problem of nourishment, but also an abstract
concern to quench intellectual and spiritual needs. He will
argue that students, faculty, staff, and administration can address
these broader hunger needs through direct, self-reflection, and our
own discipline-specific research, teaching and learning.
Dr. Harry Denny is Assistant Professor of English and Director
of Writing Centers in the Institute for Writing Studies at St.
John's University. Harry's primary work focuses on
composition studies, writing center theory and practice, cultural
studies and research methods. He currently has a book,
Facing the Center: Toward an Identity Politics of
One-to-one Conferences, with Utah State University Press (to
be published spring 2010). With Michele Eodice at the
University of Oklahoma, he is developing another manuscript on
research methods for writing centers. His research has
focused on the rhetoric of social movements and identity politics,
with a specific focus on those issues in relation to writing
centers, particularly as sites for community-building and for
cross-cultural/disciplinary dialogue.
Lunch will be available.
