the Show!
St. John’s University will welcome over 400 excited new
members of the class of 2012 and their parents during this summer’s
first session of New
Student Orientation on June 23, 2008. This year’s
movie-themed Orientation is a chance for all incoming students to
learn about St. John’s University and get a preview of life as a
St. John’s student.

The entire St. John’s community, students, faculty and staff,
eagerly anticipates the start of Orientation and the arrival of the
new students every year. “Orientation means the world to me.
It really made me love St. John’s, not just as a freshman, but now
as a student leader. It also signals the start of a great
summer of meeting new people and establishing a stronger bond with
my fellow leaders,” says Orientation Leader and St. John’s College
of Liberal Arts and Sciences senior Hadassah St. Hubert.
New to this year’s three-day Orientation is Mission Day, a day
when each student participates in one act of service in Queens,
Manhattan, Brooklyn or Long Island. “Service during Orientation is
a wonderful way to begin to engage and initiate students to St.
John’s and to what it means to be a part of the Vincentian
community,” said Rev. James Maher,
C.M., D.Min., Vice President for Student Affairs. After
completing service, the students will all meet at the Manhattan
campus to reflect and share their experiences of service.
As in previous years, the students will tour lower Manhattan led
by Discover New York faculty like English Professor Robert Forman,
Ph.D. who says: “The walking tours are a special kind of fun.
I love seeing things that I have seen hundreds of times through the
eyes of students who may never have seen them or really taken the
time to look at them.” The tour ends with a Spirit of New York
Cruise along the Hudson River.
The introduction to St. John’s student life concludes with a
Mardi Gras party – complete with decorative masks and movie ticket
giveaways.
Parents and Guardians, You’re Welcome
Too!
Parents and guardians can participate in Orientation through the Parent
Orientation Program. Many of the Orientation events created for
students are also open to parents and guardians. Parents and their
new St. John’s students can attend together to have their questions
and concerns answered by the end of their Orientation session.
“It’s important that we speak to both, parents and students, about
coming to college so that we can ease all their anxieties at the
same time,” says Fr. Maher.
Orientation will be held from June 23, up until the New Student
Convocation held on August 26, 2008. See photos from last
year’s Student Convocation. This includes all International
as well as Graduate School Orientations.
