Wellness Education

The Wellness Education Team engages with students and collaborates with other University departments to develop and deliver programs, events and services that create an increased awareness about the issues that most relate to students’ wellbeing.

Leadership opportunities are provided through programs like Wellness Peer Education and Stressbusters where students learn and share with their peers about healthy lifestyles.

Programming is created to meet our students' wellness needs and provide a steady stream of information so individuals can make informed choices about their health and wellness!

Several events are held annually including:

•    Wellness Week
•    Take Back the Night
•    National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week
•    Safe Spring Break
•    Great American Smoke Out
•    Kick Butts Day
•    Body Image Awareness Week
•    Turn Off the Violence Week/Clothesline Project

Members of the professional staff are also available to address classes, clubs, and other organizations on matters concerning wellness, stress management, substance abuse, healthy relationships, nutrition, body image, study skills, time management and other subject areas as requested.

To request a presentation please email swell@stjohns.edu or call 718-990-7537.

OTHER PREVENTION EFFORTS
Wellness Education is specifically charged with much of the University’s Alcohol and Other Drug Use Prevention efforts and to guide students as they strive to follow the University’s policy with regard to substance abuse.

There are multiple facets to that programming including:

•   AlcoholEdu for College: St. John's University is one of hundreds of institutions nationwide taking a new approach to alcohol prevention.  AlcoholEdu for College is an on-line, science-based course designed not to preach but rather to educate students about alcohol and its effects on the mind and body.

•    BASICS: This program is run in partnership with SWELL’s Center for Counseling and Consultation. Students who are found to have violated the University AOD policy are referred to take an on-line inventory and meet with a staff member of the Center to discuss their choices and receive further guidance as necessary. These students are also assigned to participate in the CHOICES program.

•   CHOICES: This two-session class is designed for students who need additional guidance in the decision making process around using alcohol and other drugs. An added focus for the CHOICES classes which takes place in a group setting through a wellness coaching model is on overview of personal wellness, the nature of addiction and the impact of media on our behaviors.

•  SOBER 24-7: This website and social media campaign was created by St.John’s students for St. John’s students. Its focus is to raise awareness of actual student behavior and on the array of alcohol-free activities that are available on and around campus.
